Build and maximize a likelihood

Problem

Observations 1,2,31,2,3 are i.i.d. from an exponential distribution with unknown rate λ>0\lambda>0. Write the likelihood and log-likelihood, then find the MLE.

Reveal answer or reference solution

The likelihood is

L(λ)=∏i=13λe−λxi=λ3e−6λ,λ>0L(\lambda)=\prod_{i=1}^3\lambda e^{-\lambda x_i} =\lambda^3e^{-6\lambda},\qquad \lambda>0

Thus ℓ(λ)=3log⁡λ−6λ\ell(\lambda)=3\log\lambda-6\lambda. Setting ℓ′(λ)=3/λ−6=0\ell'(\lambda)=3/\lambda-6=0 gives λ^=1/2\hat\lambda=1/2. Since ℓ′′(λ)=−3/λ2<0\ell''(\lambda)=-3/\lambda^2<0, this is the unique maximum.
